High and Lows

A day after my absolutely fabulous Friday and two scoops of chemo crappiness later, I’ve had an all-in-all rough 72 hours. Both physically and mentally. I woke up Saturday morning with an extreme amount of jaw, mouth and throat pain which we quickly learned is an infection in my GI tract that comes quite often as a result of chemo. As with any infection, it onset a fever and some nausea. It continued to get worse and by Sunday my fever was up to 102.5. Pretty much sucking the life out of me, even my doctor noticed I wasn’t “as perky” as normal. Luckily I had some friends and family stop by both days which helps to put my attention on something other than the uncomfortableness; even if just for a few minutes. I certainly didn’t expect that I would be Miss Pollyanna, sunshine and rainbows the whole time but this was the first really rough patch I’ve had so far– the kind that punched me in the face with the reality of just how hard and long this road is going to be.

Then we added some insult to injury: Sunday morning my hair started to bid me goodbye. Some people may call this deep denial but I like to say I was being an enteral optimist when thinking just maybe I’d beat the odds and not lose my hair. I was quite honestly clinging onto this glimpse of hope and up until Sunday morning I was yanking on my hair everyday to see it it felt “loose” and lucky for me, it had been sticking in there quite well. Unfortunately, and unknowingly to me, the hair loss comes on extremely quickly and from Sunday morning to when I first noticed hair on my pillow, I was pulling out large chunks by Monday morning (pukeeeee). This quite literally made me feel nauseous. So, since my mom was here for the day, I had one of my favorite nurses and lets face it, didn’t have much of a schedule, I decided to rip the band-aid off as quick as possible and take control of the situation. With a Beyonce playlist of “If I were a boy” and “Diva” blaring in the background, we began the buzz-a-thon: and to my utter shock, it felt great. The first row of hair took my breath a way a bit but I didn’t cry because I felt a sense of control. It felt like I was choosing this, not my sickness making me do it. Which was empowering and important for me to feel.

And, it’s gone! G.I. Jane, anyone?
(refresh the page to see a little slideshow of the whole “buzz-a-thon”)

One life lesson learned yesterday: anxiety leading up to a challenge is more than half the battle. The thought of buzzing off my hair ended up being far worse than the actual agony of doing it. And, if you decide to make something shitty, something fun, it’s guaranteed to be a better experience than if you didn’t.

In or out of the hospital…Fridays are the best.

Today is a good day. I’m over the two week mark of being in the hospital and if everything goes smoothly, I could be in my own bed and eating a home cooked meal in 10 days. WAHOO!!!! Not sure if I’m beginning to go crazy from being locked up in one small room, if it’s all the steroids I’m on or if I’m just feeling really happy today. But whatever it is, I’ve got my gorgeous lei on (courtesy of my Hawaiian lovah Miss Ali Catalano) and me and Uncle Fred just completed my first selfie photoshoot. BOOM.

Image

Now that I think of it, all this energy is probably the adrenaline I’m still feeling from finishing my first big league acting gig. Oh what’s that you say? Let me explain… I was awoken to my favorite and fabulous nurse asking if I wanted to be in a video they were making about the hospital. Is that even a question? DUH I want to be the featured patient– how fun is that?! So I got up and quickly brushed my short new do, put it in a cute pony and pink headband and hopped back into bed (who says you have to look sickly even if you’re sick). Signed some papers and it was “lights, camera, {hospital} action!” Overall, I would say I did a phenomenal job at my first professional actress– wide eyed, pretend chatting and lots of cheesin’. Possibly a bit too much cheesin’ as they had to ask me to stop smiling so much but hey, who wants to see a grumpy gus anyways?

After that excitement, I enjoyed a delicious bagel and cream cheese with two very plastic-y pieces of bacon. (gotta take what I can get). The army of doctors came in and had no news. WOO– as they like to say, “no news is good news.”

Mike is working from the hospital today so I had a buddy to watch the Price is Right’ which is a highlight of the day– could that show be any better? Only if they bring back Bob Barker. But other than that, it’s perfection.

I got my yoga mat a few days ago so I’ve been doing my own little yogi sessions the past few days which have really helped a lot. It makes me feel physically and mentally strong.

Image

Mike and I just finished dancing around our room for a bit which is a sure-fire way to make anyone feel good and I’m waiting for my arugula pizza from Trader Joe’s to get delivered while chomping on some delectable Deep River chips (the best ever) —  Life isn’t half bad.

Happy Friday everyone, I hope you’re having a fabulous and energetic day!

Oscar Night…Hospital Dorm Room Style

After a physically tough weekend, I’m happy to be feeling a bit better tonight and have a night off from the chemo cocktail. Therefore, it’s time to celebrate being fabulous and partaking in all the Oscar craziness.

Cheers to having fun just about anywhere.

After suiting up in my most fashionable attire, I took a walk down my own red carpet filled with nurses and doctors in their finest scrubs.

Image

Then, just in time for the “real” red carpet, Mike and I dined on some delish cheese and crackers and some sparkling Ginger Ale. It was divine. After chowing down on some snacks, it was time to pamper myself and do my nails.

Image

They look good if I do say so myself.

As it was time for Ellen to take the stage and get this Oscar party started, it was time to put my tiara on and be a 25 year old princess. Nothin quite like wearing a tiara…makes you feel like a real winner.

Image

The ironic part about my excitement for the Oscars is that I have not seen one of the nominated movies so I really don’t care who or what wins tonight. Except for one very important award that I shall be giving out myself…

The Oscar for Most Supportive Boyfriend Goes To (drum roll please)……

An Unexpected Turn

A week ago yesterday, on February 21, 2014, my world got turned upside down. Well…as much as I’ll let it. I had been experiencing some weird health issues and finally went to the ER when I found myself in the lactation center at work rolling around on the floor in pain. No fun. I knew something was wrong but not in my wildest dreams did I expect to hear what I did when the ER doctor walked into the room and told me that I most likely had leukemia. After being rushed over to Brigham & Women’s Hospital and a few tests later, I was officially diagnosed with ALL Acute Leukemia. Hence the unexpected turn.

It’s been over a week since I got the news. It’s been over a week in the hospital and it’s really just the beginning of what will be a very long journey (about two years of chemo is expected). And it’s been a week filled with a lot of emotions; scared, angry, overwhelmed, anxious but above all, a feeling of being truly blessed. Clearly this is not how I thought I would ring in my 25th birthday (yup, rang it in  with my first chemo cocktail!) but this week has also shown me just how lucky I am. I have received the most unbelievable outpouring of love and support, such that I don’t feel deserving. But a kind of love and support that has overwhelmed me and has allowed me to only see this new obstacle in a positive light. How can I not keep smiling when I have an amazing family that loves me unconditionally, a group of friends that have become my family, coworkers that have become incredible friends and cheerleaders, a team of doctors and nurses that are of the best quality in the world, and the most loyal, loving, and supportive boyfriend that a girl could ask for. I truly am a lucky lady.

I haven’t taken the time to update my little blog in quite some time but with so much more time on my hands, what’s stopping me now? It’ll be a bit of a change of pace than my typical musings about going out, playing with friends and basically galavanting around Boston but it’s my life as of now. And lets face it, I’m Still Young, Still Dumb, and most certainly Still Determined.

First Championship Parade: Boston Strong!

Image

Wednesday night, the Red Sox became world champions for the third time in a decade– dynasty. I was in high school when they won it in 2004 and was living in Tampa when they won it for a second time in 2007. Thankfully, 2013 I’m right here in Boston to be able to get in on all the celebratory action.

With any big championship, although you like to hope that it will happen time and time again for years to come, you just never know when the next time will be so I was ready to take on the city and get the full championship craziness. Saturday morning rolled around and I was up at 7 and making bloodies by 730. Great way to start the day. Mike made a delicious breakfast of potatoes and bacon egg and cheeses– meal of champions right there. Finished up breakfast and popped a bottle of champagne because clearly that’s necessary on a day such as this. Overall, champion choices were being made time and time again before 9am.

Took the train down to City Hall and the energy was electrifying. Everyone out and about dressed in their red, blue and Sox finest. Not like it doesn’t always, but it felt pretty damn good to be a part of this city. The streets were absolutely packed and buzzing with excitement. The parade had begun and we just had to wait for the Duck Boats to arrive on Cambridge Street. After about an hour or so of waiting, the rolling rally was right in front of us. Mike put me on his shoulders so I could see– which really was necessary, as these 5 foot stumpy legs were not helping my cause of seeing anything past the kid in front of me’s baseball hat. Up on the shoulders I went and I suddenly had the best seat in the house. The boats went by and it was so exciting to wave to all the players and see the trophy in person– so shiny and big, it’s quite the sight. I nearly broke Mike’s neck with  the amount I was jumping around up there but I couldn’t help myself– it was like partying with the team, and that, that’s a fun time. 20 minutes later and all that was left on the street was red, white and blue confetti.

The parade may have ended but the day certainly did not. The streets were still buzzing and every bar in Boston was absolutely packed– just the way I like it. After about 15 minutes of waiting in line, we headed into Hennessey’s (seems to be my go-to place for big days and nights of drankkkking lately) and continued on a glorious day of beers, wings, singing, friends and laughs.

Yesterday reminded me of every reason why I love living in this city. Yes, it may get cold in the winter months and yes, the traffic can be really horrendous at times but the heart of this city is pure perfection. The sports are second to none. The bars and restaurants are absolutely on point. And the people are the most genuine, spirited and big-hearted people you’ll find just about anywhere. There truly is nowhere else in the world I’d rather live. So today, I’m waking up on this cold, rainy Sunday feeling wicked grateful and wicked happy to live in the best city eva, Boston, Massachusetts.

 Go SOX!

A Beautiful New Baby Girl

Jeesh, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve written a post and I’m not sure how the time slipped away.

SO big news in my family and in my life– I am officially an Auntie. Eleni Kathryn was born at 5:30 am on September 28, 2013 weighing 6 lbs 7 oz! She is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever laid my eyes on– big blue eyes, a FULL head of curly dark hair, the softest skin I’ve ever touched, a tiny round nose that’s as cute as a button and the most fabulous smirk I’ve ever seen an infant give. The past 9 months have gone by in the blink of an eye (however I’m sure my sister would disagree with that) and it’s both so exciting and relieving to have her here with us. I was surprised at how nervous I felt the weeks leading up to the due date– the overwhelming feeling of concern for not only the baby but for my sister. Millions of women give birth every day but when it’s the one you love going through it, it’s a whole different experience and something I really didn’t expect.

So without further ado, here is my beautiful baby niece…

To my little Eleni: I feel so blessed to have you in my life and to have you as my niece and my goddaughter. My hope for you is that you grow up to be a smart, kind, independent and loving person. I hope you don’t take life too seriously and you have the ability to love hard and love often. I hope your life is filled with laughter because if there’s anything I believe, it’s that laughing can make just about anything better. I love you to the moon and back.

Rustic & Vintage Baby Shower

present table

My older sister, Courtney, is having a baby girl!!! It’s the first grandchild on either side of the family so you can only guess everyone’s excitement. I am lucky enough to say that I will be the Godmother of this little bundle of cuteness and I cannot wait another second to meet her.

Last Sunday, my mom and I threw her a baby shower and I thought I’d share some pics and how-to’s. I wanted it to be a beautiful baby shower– one that was classy, cute and chic all at the same time. Since we know it’s a girl, I obviously wanted to have lots of pinks and make it super girly. However, I didn’t want it to be so over-the-top that it was ‘too much.’ So I settled on a ‘Vintage/Rustic’ theme.

Color theme was pale pinks and creams with pops of dark, richer pinks. I wanted it to feel like an elevated country theme (without the ‘twang), so I went with distressed woods, mason jars, homemade drink stirrers, cardboard straws, and “vintage” baby clothes strung throughout the room. Below are some pics from the party!

My mom saved some of her favorite outfits from when each of us were babies, so we took those and strung them across the present table to add a personal touch.

In order to spruce up the bar, I got wooden skewers for grilling and wrapped pink washi tape around it to make little pink flags for guests to add to their drinks!

We placed this sweet sign on top of the bar — best part is that it acted as a great decoration as well as a nice gift for my sister to take home for the nursery.

As for the tables, I bought $1 mini-sized easles and painted them with chalkboard paint in order to write out what ‘activities’ we had going on during the shower.

I purchased plain mason jars and printed out some adorable ‘it’s a girl’ cut-outs and used modge podge to adhere them to the glasses. I loved this because it had multiple purposes– decor, water glasses, and our guests party favor.

For the one of the ‘activities,’ I printed out baby images of each of the immediate family members. Guests then had to fill out a sheet guessing who was who. I made them all sepia tone to give it the rustic look (plus, it made it harder to guess who was who). At the end of the party, we revealed who won from each table and the winner got to take home the centerpiece (an oversized vintage milk jar with two pink roses inside). We also had plain white onesies on each table and asked guests to decorate it as a table–they came out adorable and my sister is planning to put them in the baby’s baby book. Lastly, we had pink cardstock cut up and placed on the table when guests first walked in and asked that they make a wish for the baby. These will get given to her when she’s older and should be very special.

Last but not least (this was my favorite), when guests were responding, I requested them to bring a cute headband so that I could stack them all together and showcase during the party. I took a large candle and wrapped it in pink tights so that the wax wouldn’t come off onto the bows. I loved the way it looked and the bows people brought were just darling!

Less than a month until our little princess is born and I am so excited to meet her!

An Unconventional Love Story

The beauty of love stories is that they’re all different. They all have their own beginnings and middles and ends. Mine didn’t start with love at first sight…not even close in fact. If anything, you could call it ‘boss at first sight.’

When I graduated college, I started working at a medium-sized advertising agency in NH. My first day of work, I was introduced to Mike, the guy I would be directly reporting to. My first impression was serious, bald, gotta be in his late 20’s (which is cool), and nice. A few hours into my day I looked over to his cube which was directly across from mine and chuckled… his feet were up on his desk, hands behind his head and he was chatting away on the phone with a friend about how fun the weekend had been and laughing about how many drinks they had had. Excellent, I thought. I can totes get along with him.

In September, I got to go on my first ‘business trip’ to Stamford, CT. I was thrilled. However, I was feeling like spending 3-4 hours in a car with my boss, alone, could be realllllll awkward. So we got in the car, headed to Stamford and in what felt like 30 minutes, we were there. Not one awkward silence or moment that made me want to throw myself out the window. In fact, I had a blast. We dropped our bags and headed to an amazing tapas restaurant across the street from the hotel to grab a bite to eat. Dinner was pretty much perfection: food was incredible, wine was flowing like water and we didn’t stop talking the whole time. Too much fun at dinner leads to bar hopping until 1:30 am. Wooops. The client meeting the next day was far from enjoyable but through my bloodshot eyes, I was glowing with excitement. I had just had the greatest non-date of my life.

After that trip, our friendship continued to grow and I proceeded to think of as many reasons as possible for why people from work should go out for drinks together. I found myself hating Friday’s and loving Mondays. We began texting all the time, eating lunch together everyday and overall spending far too much time together than two co-workers ever should. After one too many drinks at a charity gala, I found myself making a move and getting denied, hard. Mike was NOT happy with me. Next morning I found myself with a hell of a hangover and a considerable amount of regret. Monday was going to be quite embarassing. Turned out, he couldn’t stay mad at me for long and we were back to chatting and texting all day. For about two months, we talked and hung out constantly but the whole ‘supervisor’ thing was really getting in the way.

And then fate stepped in. Another business trip.

We got told that we had a client meeting on a Monday morning, December 8, 2011 in Stamford. Stamford is only a 40 minute train ride from NYC so I brilliantly decided that we should head there early Sunday morning and spend the day in the big citayyy. A day in NYC all expenses paid? Genuis, I know. So after very little convincing, I met Mike at a Panera Bread parking lot near his house at about 5:30 in the morning and we sped off to Connecticut. Got to Stamford, checked into our hotel, hopped on the train and were in NYC by 11:15am. Not too shabby. By 11:30 we had found our first bar. With that, “super-date” had officially begun. We proceeded to spend the entire day together; eating, drinking, shopping and most importantly — laughing. Finally by the end of the night, and plenty of drinks later, I leaned in for a kiss. I’m not sure where my courage came from but I did it. Unfortunatley for me, I got denied- again. He proceeded to tell me that we couldn’t do that because it was inappropriate. I quickly reminded him, us being in NYC is also probably inappropriate. A little pissed, he went to the bathroom and a few minutes later, strolled out, grabbed my face and the rest is history. (except for the fact that my hair went up in flames at a nice restaurant after our epic first kiss. Not my smoothest moment).

December 7, 2012 rolled around and we were back in NYC celebrating our one year anniversary.

In less than a month, I’m moving into his house and I can’t really believe it. It seems like our NYC “super-date” was just a few weeks ago but it certainly wasn’t. We’ve learned a lot about each other in these past two years, have had countless BDE’s (“best day ever’s”) and most importantly, have become best friends. I never would have guessed on my first day at the ad agency that my serious but seemingly nice boss would become the love of my life. Never, ever, ever. But it happened, and for that, I feel so thankful.

It certainly isn’t a typical ‘love story’ but then again, I wouldn’t want it to be. Because it’s our love story. A little off but a lot amazing. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Vacation Bliss

After over a year of having no more than four consecutive days in a row off, I was delighted when the clock struck 5pm last Monday and I was officially ‘off the clock’ for 6 days in a row- wahoo!!!

Mike and I started the vacation with a trip to Portland, Maine. I haven’t ever been there and it’s less than a two hour car ride. So we packed our bags and headed north. As luck would have it, we got up early, packed our lunches, got in our bathing suits and headed straight to 62 degree and raining weather. No bueno. With that, we checked into our hotel and ended up doing this the rest of the day:

Image

Hopping from bar to bar to bar. Not what we had planned but I’ll never complain about a day like that. We ended up at a nice place called The Grill Room & Bar for dinner. It was absolutely delish! We sat at the ‘chef’s table’ which was offered to us because there were no other tables left. So glad they did, we got to see all the food being made and the chefs and wait staff were super nice. We had so much food and everything was phenomenal– in particular the lobster bisque and lobster tail. If you’re ever in Portland, this place is a must try. Here’s their website: http://www.thegrillroomandbar.com/

Wednesday we woke up and it wasn’t as cold but not very sunny so we decided to hop on a ferry and take it to a small island off of Portland called ‘Peaks Island.’

Image

While we were ferrying over, our luck turned around and the clouds lifted and the sun came out. All of a sudden, it was hot, sunny and absolutely beautiful out! We got to the island, changed into our bathing suits & cover ups and rented some bikes. The island is only 4 miles wide but so quaint and adorable. The people here are really friendly, the houses are beautiful, the views are breathtaking and there’s a small beach that you can walk (and we laid out for on a while). They have a few small restaurant and bars right on the water, in which we stopped at two of them.

Image

Image

To my dismay, we had to leave this perfect little place only a few hours after falling in love with it so when we got back to Portland we treated ourselves to some unbelievable lobstahhh rolls and headed back to Boston.

Thursday– it’s America’s Birthday. I love America, so I love this day!!! We headed over to a good ‘ol back yard pool party to have some good eats, good drinks and good laughs with good friends. It was about 95 out and really sunny so it was a perfect day to be by a pool. What’s more, I got to see my favorite little creatures in the world– bull dogs! Our friends have two english bull dogs, “Hogan” and “Hoodsie.”

Image

We finished the day at another friends house to enjoy the fireworks from their rooftop deck in Charlestown. Great view and of course, the Boston Pops put on a great show. Gotta love patriotic music– always puts you in the spirit!

Image

Friday and Saturday I spent with my a bunch of girlfriends from college that were in town for the 4th! You won’t be able to find me much happier than when I get to be back with my best friends. I hate that we’re all scattered around the country so whenever we get a group of us together, it’s really special. Here’s a few pics to sum up our two days together:

drinking coronas in the pool

crushing delicious bloody’s and breakfast in the morning

and topping off our vacation together the best way we know how… with a lobstahhh dinner!

A week later and the clocks about to strike 5pm again on Monday. It’s safe to say I won’t have the same week as I did last week.

Until next time,

Jessy
